The Do’s and Don’ts for IPL Photorejuvenation Aftercare-AFYA Skin and Body Clinic | Guelph and Waterloo Skin Clinic.jpg

IPL Photorejuvenation is one of the most innovative skin care treatments out there today. IPL, which stands for “intense pulsed light”, is used to treat various skin imperfections. It removed unwanted brown spots and redness and also improves the tone and texture of the skin all while slowing down the aging process.

For the best results, here is a handy guide to what you should and shouldn’t do after an IPL photorejuvenation treatment session.

DO Maintain Moisture

IPL uses an intense light pulse, in some ways similar to a laser. It can result in the skin drying out, causing flaking and redness. That is why it’s important to keep the skin moisturized after an IPL treatment. Use a gentle moisturizer consistently to keep your skin from drying out!

DON’T Spend Time in the Sun

It is recommended to avoid sun exposure both before and after an IPL treatment. Your skin will be especially vulnerable after the treatment, so unprotected sun exposure could cause more damage. Be sure to wear SPF or stay out of the sun if you’ll be outdoors, and avoid all tanning.

DO Gently Cleanse

In the days following the IPL treatment, you may notice your skin begins to flake. This is perfectly normal and is just the imperfections slowly peeling off. Use a gentle cleanser to help remove the dead skin cells. However, DO NOT use scrubs, exfoliates, or masks. Avoid picking or scratching at any dry spots as this could cause more damage.

DON’T Wear Makeup Right Away

IPL leaves your skin more vulnerable for a few days, which is why it’s recommended to go without makeup for at least 12 hours after your IPL treatment. The good news is that is usually just one night of being makeup-free. But if you have an important event coming up try to schedule your appointment so that you can keep your skin makeup-free for a few hours.

DO Use Cold Compresses

Redness and slight swelling are normal after an IPL treatment. It’s okay to use cold compresses to relieve this. Sometimes sleeping with your head elevated can help relieve swelling as well. Burns and blisters are not normal though, and if you notice it please call us right away.

DON’T Be Around Excessive Heat

After an IPL treatment avoids overheating your skin. Avoid hot baths, excessively hot showers, saunas, and dry heat for a few days after. It’s also recommended to avoid working out for a day or two after treatment. Warm showers are okay though!
