Tired of annoying stubble or embarrassing dark hair? It’s time to ditch the razor and book an appointment for laser hair removal. This procedure has become incredibly popular in recent years, and after you get it done you’ll see why. Here’s everything you need to know before going in for your first laser hair removal appointment.
How does laser hair removal work?
Laser hair removal uses pulsed light, which is attracted to the dark pigmentation in the hair. The light enters the hair follicle, destroying the base of it with a burst of heat. There are three stages of hair growth: growing, resting, and shedding. Laser hair removal targets hair in the growth stage. After treatment hair will fall out within 10-14 days.
What makes a good laser hair removal candidate?
This treatment works best on people with dark hair and light skin. This is because the laser can easily pick up only on the melanin in the hair. Those with darker skin may experience discoloration if the wrong machine is used. People with light hair may also not have great results, as the laser cannot pick up on the pigmentation. Make sure to come in for our complimentary consultation before your first laser hair removal appointment so that we can determine the best course for your skin and hair type.
What areas can this treatment target?
Hair grows all over our body, whether we want it to or not. Thankfully, laser hair removal can be used to treat unwanted hair all over the body. At AFYA, we offer laser hair removal for legs, back, face, chest, arms, bikini area, and everywhere else!
How long does laser hair removal take?
The time of treatment depends on what area is being done. For legs or back, it may be an hour or two, while the face could only take minutes. Results will be apparent after only one treatment, but it usually takes between 5-8 treatments, spread 4 to 6 weeks apparent, to see 70-99% reduction. We also recommend getting yearly maintenance treatments for the first couple of years.
How long does the treatment last?
There are no guaranteed results for laser hair removal because every person is different. Everyone’s hair has different growth rates. Some people notice hair re-growth after several months or years, while others never have to shave again.
How do you prepare for laser hair removal treatments?
Don’t worry; there isn’t much preparation that needs to be done before a laser hair removal treatment. Clients do need to shave the area ahead of time. The laser can react with the hair on the surface of the skin, and there may be a burnt hair smell if the area isn’t shaved.
What should be avoided before and after an appointment?
Before going into your laser hair removal appointment, make sure to avoid using any products on your skin. This includes deodorant, lotion, and makeup. Self-tanners and tanning should also be avoided before and after a treatment. Waxing, tweezing, and threading should be avoided for 1-4 weeks before an appointment as well. Be sure to call and ask what else to avoid before and after a laser hair removal treatment if you’re concerned.
